How To Prevent Snow From Causing Your Basement To Flood

by Tara Pena

If you are not accustomed to living in snowier areas, you may not be aware of the risk of your basement flooding. When the snow melts rapidly, basements that are not waterproofed are bound to experience flooding.

Clear Snow Away From Your Home

Make sure you clear your walkway and near your house of snow so that it is less likely to melt and cause flooding. Snow that is piled near your home is just waiting to melt and create a torrent of water entering your basement. Therefore, you should clear away the snow if it is in excess of two feet. After it has snowed, try to remove the snow as quickly as possible because the snow will become heavier and more difficult to remove the more time that passes.

Remove Snow From Your Roof

Snow that accumulates on your roof can later melt and cause flooding as the melted snow accumulates along your foundation. Also, the melted snow can place strain on your roof and possibly cause it to cave in.

Clear out any snow that has accumulated at an overhang or an eavestrough. Water will backup wherever there are large quantities of snow. When trying to remove snow, you will need to be careful not to damage the part of your home that you are trying to remove the snow from. Use a tool that is designed specifically for this purpose, such as a long-handled snow rake. Another advantage is that you will not have to climb a ladder and you will be less likely to fall off and injure yourself.

Add More Green Space

If you increase the amount of green space that is around your home, the vegetation will help absorb melted snow, reducing the risk that the melted snow will pool near your foundation and cause damage.

Clean Your Gutters

Make sure to clean your gutters before the winter. Otherwise, as your gutters become clogged, the snow will melt and become trapped. Then, the accumulated moisture will form an ice dam. Make sure the downspouts are working properly and are directing water away from the foundation of your home.

Get A Sump Pump

All of these measures will reduce the risk that your basement will flood. However, the best way to ensure that snow does not cause your basement to flood is to get a good sump pump. This device will work with a water-collecting basin to pump water out of your home, preventing your basement from flooding.

If your basement does experience any flooding issues, make sure to contact a company like B-Sure Systems Inc.
